'Innocent Erendira: and Other Stories' Review
Innocent Erendira and Other Stories by Gabriel García Márquez
Somehow, the title story manages to make systematic sexual exploitation boring. Call me callous, but i didn't quite manage to give a shit about Innocent Erendira. The story that followed, 'The sea of lost time', however, was a straightup treat. A perverse fairytale exploring the violence of market exchange, riddled with achingly poetic distractions. In fact, it is in the arena of poetic distractions where Gabriel holds mastery ~ the best of these stories FEEL profound and meaningful, without actually delivering any substance. Should we call Gabs a genius for reducing profundity and meaning into pure sensations? Yes. But only half these stories hit the mark ~ the others just flounder around hitting the sex and death buttons in an attempt to feign emotional depth. B+ Gabs.
